HISTORY

In 1931, the Bridgestone Tire Co., LTD was founded in Kurume, Japan by Shojiro Ishibashi a manufacturer of rubber-soled footware and eventually renamed it to Bridgestone Corporation.   Ishibashi admired Firestone, reversed the english translation of his own surname, which means "Stone Bridge", to give his new venture a brand name with an international sound.

Bridgestone tire quality expanded into sporting goods and other rubber products for industry.  The quality of Bridgestone tire products was soon widely recognized, and its tires were adopted by three leading auto makers in Japan at the time: General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler.  By 1960's, it was perched for fast international growth along with the Japanese best automobile tire industry.  A supreme improve quality to obtain the company's prestigious Deming Prize in 1968.

In 1967 Bridgestone entered the U.S. market through sales subsidiary in California.  Very proud, Bridgestone tires established its first U.S. product base in 1983.  By purchasing a Firestone truck tire plant in LaVerge, Tennessee.  Bridgestone continues to be an important manufacturer for truck and bust tires as well as light truck tires and passenger tire as part of Bridgestone Firestone North America Tire, LLC.

In 1988 Bridgestone tires purchased Firestone tires for $2.6 Billion, with combined company being the worlds largest tire and rubber company.  In 1990 the Warren County plant, one of the first step take by newly formed company and truck tire plant in Warren, Tennessee.  The same year, Bridgestone operation in Americas were consolidated as Bridgestone Inc. As part of the integration with Bridgestone existing U.S. operations, Bridgestone moved its headquarters from Akron to Nashville in 1992.

Bridgestone tire announced in August 1997 that it would build a $435 million passenger tire and light truck tire plant in Aiken County, S.C.  The plant began shipping tires in March 1999.
