Continental developed the Conti SportContact 5 SSR as a Max Performance Summer run-flat tire to offer momentary prolonged mobility in case of complete air loss caused by a puncture. The Conti SportContact 5SSR is a Summer tire designed to combine better cornering traction and short braking distances with improved tread wear and reduced fuel consumption. Like all summer tires, the Conti SportContact is not meant to be driven in temperatures close to freezing, on ice or through the snow. With the ContiSportContact 5 SSR tires fitted their vehicles drivers can stay mobile in case they have a flat tire. Although punctured, this tire allows them to reach their destination or tire service facility without the need to exchange the flat tire with the spare. The reinforced sidewalls of the ContiSportContact 5 SSR allows the car to continue driving up to 50 miles (80km) at a maximum speed of 50 mph (80 km/h) depending on the vehicle’s weight and the road conditions. Molding Continental's Black Chilli compound into an irregular tread design the tire features a macro-block outboard shoulder that adjusts to the road surface to deliver improved traction and cornering stability. The four circumferential grooves disperse water from the footprint to resist skidding and boost wet traction. An unbroken middle rib provides straight-line tracking and reliable steering response. The short-chain polymers of the Black Chilli Compound respond to braking forces by building up heat to provide short braking distance on dry and wet road conditions, while the long-chain polymers of the compound discharge the absorbed energy more efficiently at continuous speeds to minimize rolling resistance. This makes the tire stops faster, stays cooler for prolonged tire life, to conserve on fuel consumption. The ContiSportContact 5 SSR's inner structure consists of matching steel belts strengthened with spirally wrapped polyamide that boost ride quality while tuning the lateral rigidity and vertical flexibility of the contact area. The protected self-sustaining sidewalls prevent pinching on the inside of the tire in the event of a puncture. Although they cannot be called run-flat tires, tires bearing the MOExtended/MOE trademark on their sidewalls offer run-flat-like characteristics by providing partial temporary prolonged mobility after a complete loss of air caused by a puncture. MOExtended/MOE tires do not have the same speed and distance durability like conventional run-flat tires; therefore, they should never be used as alternatives in situations where conventional run-flat tires are necessary.
